The first, and most crucial point for all new EV or perspective EV drivers to remember is that there are a wide variety and a huge number of charging options open to the driving public, right now. Let’s look at some of these options below.
One of the most convenient and common charging solutions for electric vehicles is at-home charging. If you have a private garage or access to a dedicated parking space, you can plug in your car to charge it at home. There are two options for this: The first option is using a type 1 charger that plugs into a standard household outlet, using a standard 3-pin plug. This will charge an EV at approximately 2kW per hour. The second option is using an at-home charging point. There are now a huge variety of options for these, but the majority come down to a simple wall-mounted piece of technology that uses a type 2 charger cable to charge an EV at approximately 7kW per hour. To give context, this will recharge the vast majority of EVs by an average of 50% in 4 hours. Both charging cables are provided in each Zimbl EV.
For EV users without access to at-home charging, public charging stations serve as a crucial solution for keeping the vehicle charged during the day. Public charging infrastructure has expanded rapidly in recent years, making it easier for renters to find charging stations in various locations.
Type 2 Charging: Like home charging stations, Level 2 public chargers offer faster charging compared to standard outlets. These are now widely available in supermarkets, car parks, retail parks, industrial parks and local council run car parks.
These often come in a variety of charging speeds depending on the type of hardware; 7-, 11- and 22-kW AC being the most common. It is worth noting that the vast majority of EV production models can only accept a 7 or 11kW AC charging speed, regardless of the power available to the charger.
For electric vehicle users planning extensive trips or facing time constraints, fast-charging networks offer a game-changing solution. These networks, often run by EV manufacturers or third-party providers, allow EVs to charge quickly and efficiently, minimising the time spent at charging stations.
DC Fast Charging: These stations provide rapid charging and can recharge an EV battery to 80% in approximately 20-40 minutes (depending on the size of the battery and its level of charge), making them ideal for longer trips. They have output capacities ranging from 40-350kW, though again it is worth noting that not all EVs can accept DC charges at the higher end of this range. Yet.
